Vietnam Visa on arrival posts

Vietnam Visa for Hong Kong New Passport, Hong Kong Document of Identity for Visa Purposes, and British National Overseas – BNO

Starting in February 2019, the Immigration Department of Vietnam has added 35 more countries to the list of countries that can avail of the eVisa program. One of the countries that were recently added on the list is Hong Kong, along with Macau.

However, the eVisa system of Vietnam will only honor the old version of the Hong Kong passport. These are passports that have passport numbers starting in “letter K”. However, the newly issued Hong Kong passport starts with the letter H. Unfortunately, these passports are not yet recognized in the eVisa system. So those who have the new passport cannot apply for the eVisa just yet.

Chinese Passports for Vietnam eVisa

There is an increasing number of Chinese tourists visiting Vietnam lately, which is why the immigration of Vietnam has relaxed the visa rules for Chinese citizens, including those from Hong Kong and Macau.

Chinese citizens who came from Mainland China can avail of both the Vietnam Visa on Arrival and eVisa. In order for them to avail of these visa facilities, their passport should be the old version or those with passport numbers starting in letter G. However, for those with passport numbers starting in letter E, they can only avail of the Visa on Arrival and not the eVisa.

For Hong Kong Passport Holders, those with the old version of a passport with numbers starting in letter K, they can avail of both the Visa on Arrival and eVisa. If you have the new passport where the number starts in letter H, you can only avail of the Visa on Arrival and not the eVisa.

Those who are holding a Hong Kong Document of Identity for Visa Purposes and have a passport number starting in letter D can only qualify for the visa on arrival. The eVisa system will not work for them. In addition, British Overseas Nationals who reside in China or Hong Kong can only avail of the Vietnam Visa on Arrival and not the eVisa.

Citizens of Macau can qualify for both the Vietnam Visa on Arrival and Vietnam eVisa, for as long as their passport number starts with the letters MA.

Hong Kong Passports and Hong Kong Document of Identity

The new passport of Hong Kong citizens was issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department to Hong Kong citizens who have recently applied or renewed their passports. These passports start with the letter H. On the other hand, the Hong Kong Document of Identity for Visa Purpose is a biometric document that the Hong Kong Immigration Department issues to Hong Kong residents who cannot obtain a passport for certain reasons.
